I have an iMac, the first Intel model running OS X 10.4.10:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac
Model Identifier: iMac4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core Duo
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 2 MB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: IM41.0055.B08
SMC Version: 1.1f5

For several months now, about once every 10 times that I put the computer to sleep it freezes when I try to wake it up. It becomes unresponsive and even the clock stops. I've tried all the routine maintenence I can think of and applied the combo updater as well. I have to power down with the power button and then restart, something that makes me wince. Any suggestons? I don't want to reinstall the system as this problem isn't that serious to me but is annoying. Thanks.

Create a new user account and keep that account logged in for a few days, and see if same problem happens. If it does not it is some preference file in normal account that is corrupted.

If it happens with a virgin account, it could be RAM although I doubt it. Report the results here and we can diagnose this next problem.

I've checked preferences with "Preferential Treatment" and there's no corruption. Is there anything else that the new user account could discover. I will try it, however, and let you know. Thanks.

Why are you sure Preferential Treatment will catch all these problems?

Yes you are right, I just wanted to report that I had tried that. Of course, what has happened is that after a few days my problem hasn't recurred with my new user account but I can't get it to happen with my regular account either. Intermittent problems are the most difficult. Thanks for your help, however.
