Many of us these days find the need to set up multiple computers in their home for various reasons. While there are several different types of networks in business or education settings, in home or home office situations, unless you are on a satellite, you either have a DSL line, or cable modem service through your cable company. With either type of service, you need a device to split your line’s signal so it can be shared among several computers.

Enter your router. A router is a switched hub that lets you share your connection among your computers. Whether you use a wired router or a wireless unit you have many different choices. I selected the Netgear RP 614 because of its ease of set-up, and low cost.

Taking the RP 614 out of the box, I found a well-written manual, as well as the set-up disk, which had additional information regarding the set-up on it as well. After you load the disk, a helper application guides you through the set up process until you are online. When I set up the router for the first time I was able to configure three machines in less than 15 minutes (for me, a networking novice, this was a major feat!).

The RP 614 is designed with the space conscious in mind. It is quite the streamlined box (see photo). The lights on the unit’s front face give the status of each connection.

They also change colors to indicate the speed of the connection (green for 100 megabits, yellow for 10 megabits). Netgear is also nice enough to include a 12-foot connection cable in the box.

I have been using this unit for over 3 months now and have only had to use the reset switch once. Overall, for the cost wary who do not need a wireless router, the Netgear RP 614 fits the bill quite nicely.
