Recently, I started thinking about those who contribute to the newsletter. Our reviews and columns all have authors’ names and brief biographies attached. This is as it should be. However, there are other volunteer members who are not readily identified in the newsletter. The four I have in mind, who make my job as Managing Editor an easy one are two Copy-editors, a Photography Editor and our Web Designer/Art Director. When I asked them for inputs to this editorial, I got the following answers.

Milt Herder, Copy Editor, has been on the newsletter staff longer than anyone else, I believe, and writes the following. “As a small agency owner – and later on the staff of promotional agencies – Milt divided his time between writing, designing, illustrating. As illustrator, he used traditional media, a fact not altered by the advent of the computer, which he reluctantly took to, mostly as a curiosity. Five years ago he found he was sensitive to felt markers fumes, and set about leaning how to scan his b&w sketches, then add color on his Mac, mostly in Photoshop.
His evaluation, You never run out of cadmium red.”

Joan Scherman, our other Copy Editor, says “I'm a photo stylist (props) and producer in print photography. I have a G4 desktop and a Titanium Powerbook G4. I use Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, Quicken, JPEGView, TechTool Pro, NetBarrier and am one of those Claris Emailer people. I've been using Virex 6.1 on my desktop for years, but will use either Virex 7.1 for my laptop or a suggestion as to what else would be as easy to update and works extremely well. I may need a new printer soon. I volunteered because I came to a meeting, the need was announced, I wanted to participate, and I was hoping to learn more about computers and programs.”

Joanne Haire, Photoraphy Editor, wrote “I work as a dietitian (RD) and/or nurse (RN) at several hospitals around town, including New York Presbyterian and Methodist. I am also a student at Pratt (14th street), majoring in digital design. I use PC's solely in the hospitals and a Mac at home. I have a G3 Pismo Powerbook, attached to a Sony Trinitron monitor and a 20MB LaCie hard Drive and networked to a PC which I use for email. I have never seen a Mac in a hospital except in the Cornell Medical Library. I use Photoshop, Illustrator and Quark when I am putting a flyer together or working on a project for school. I use Dreamweaver for the web. There is a lot of software which I would like to learn such as Flash and InDesign. 2004 will hopefully be a year in which I can upgrade. I go round and round in wanting either an iMac, an eMac or an upgraded powerbook. I also want to upgrade my camera to a Canon EOS model. I recently sold all my Olympus stuff at B and H in hopes of upgrading sooner rather than later.
Why did I volunteer? I really love working on publications. I really love working with images and colors and layouts.”

Rob Yasharian, Web Designer/Art Director sent the following information. “I am a graphic designer and do annual reports, corporate identity programs, marketing literature, investor materials and web sites for a wide array of clients ranging from Fortune 500 corporations to not-for-profit institutions. At work I use a 900 MHz G4 "quicksilver" tower with OS 9.2, QuarkXpress 4, Photoshop 7, Illustrator 10, Adobe Acrobat, and MS Office. At home I have a 550 MHz G4 Titanium Powerbook. I use OS 10.3.2 and the same software as at work plus iLife 04 suite and Dreamweaver MX. I will keep using the Tibook for at least another year before buying another computer. The plan was to get three years use before adding another. Still thinking about what the next best machine would be for the mix of home/professional needs. Definitely want something with a DVD burner. Love the portability of the laptop but the iMacs look pretty appealing, or may splurge and go w/ speed of a G5 DP.”
Why did you volunteer to help produce the newsletter? “ I asked so many questions in the forums I started to feel guilty.”

Please join me in giving these Production Staff volunteers thanks for a good job.
